I recently purchased what is called a Magic Jack. The Magic Jack is a device which plugs into one of your USB ports and allows you to make free long distance phone calls in Canada or the US for a set fee. Once you plug the Magic Jack in, it installs it’s driver and software and away you go. All that is required is a spare phone to plug into the Magic Jack and high speed Internet access.
Their were several reasons I like the Magic Jack. They are as follows:
1. Cost – $39.99 US for the Device and the first year of service. $59.99 for 5 more years.
2. Portability - It can be taken on vacation with you and your phone number travels with you.
3. Ease of setup – piece of cake.
The cost is a big one. I was paying $20.00 Canadian for unlimited long distance in North America. The Magic Jack will put me at the break even point on the initial purchase in 2 months. After 6 years I will save over a $1000.
The only draw back is I can not get a Canadian number. If I could get a Toronto number I would cancel my Rogers Home Phone service in no time at all. That said I will still save major dollars and the convince will be a big benefit when traveling.
