Making Choices

Buffer

Today is a very good day in the Cairns household. On the first day that College acceptances could be made, my son was accepted into 2 schools of his choice. He now has a month to decide which if any of these offers he will take. I am very proud of Stephen today and could not be happier.

I said something to him today that we should all do. That is to make your choices wisely.

I am usually an organized person. This means I look, analyse look again and then analyze some more. I then did some thinking and said if I was making a serious choice in life how would I go about doing it. The list I came up with as follows:

1. Make a choice in life because you want to not because you have to.

2. Think about your choices. Analyze them carefully.

3. As my good friend Owen Greaves always reminds me, do not act on emotion.

4. Be rationally.

5. Have short term and long term goals. Hopefully your decision will meet your short term goals and head towards your long term goals.

6. What are the decisions that you make on the people around you. These people can be people you work with, friends and even family.

7. Are you better off making this choice?

8. Will the people around you be better if you make this choice.

9. Will making this choice make your life better?

10. Sleep on a big choice. Never make it on the spot.

What would you do when making choices?

I make all my life decisions based on my gut - usually instantaneously - and then I worry about them later ... :)

Thank you for your kind words and your comment Ronda. The last thing we want is to be disconnected from our feelings. Their is the word respect again which is so true in the context which you have mentioned it.

I agree choices need to be discussed with those they impact. Thank you for expressing your views and for the comments.

I would add that although I agree with our friend Owen to not act on emotion, we must consider our emotions in all choices or we risk becoming disconnected from our thoughts and feelings. We must respect that we feel 'something' towards every decision and then make a choice respecting that information.

Great post Rob!

Emotions are not the same thing as a GUT feeling, emotions are unreliable at best when making big decisions. The gut feeling is more about instinct, it stems from your life experience usually. It's always best to take baby steps or small moves if you are an emotionally driven person.

I'm not allowed to make choices in our home, just kidding, most big decisions are discussed with my wife, if it impacts the kids, they get a voice too.

Thanks for the post Rob
