Fire Your Cable TV Company

Almost a year ago I fired my phone company. That is right, I decided I did not need a conventional phone line and I went to using a
Magic Jack. Well now I am about to fire my cable company. Yes that is right, by the end of this month I will be no longer be on Rogers cable.

Why would i do that you might ask. Because of two reasons: A. I am tired of paying what I can get for free and B. Cable TV is bloat ware. Let me explain both of these ideas to you so you can get a better idea of what I mean.

A. I am tired of paying for what I can get for free

In Canada we now pay an extra charge for having local tv stations on our cable systems. It is absurd that we we have to subsidize them. I can pick all of these stations up using an HD antenna without paying for them. Not only do I get my local stations for free but the HD quality is better over the air instead of over the cable since the signal is not compressed.

B. Why is Cable TV Bloat Ware?

In the world of Digital Cable TV, I am forced to take all kinds of bundled in channels which I really do not want. When we analyzed the Non Sports programming that we were watching, we have realized most of our tv watching is on a handful of stations. So why do I need to pay for all these stations? So the cable company can make more money – no thanks.

These are the two big reasons I am going to fire my cable company. Later this week I am going to write a follow-up post that explains how technically I am making this happen. I thought I would start of with the reasons why. I have a tough time paying $80 dollars a month for things I do not use.

Have you considered firing your cable company?

Anita we have an amazing connection:) I live in an apartment so a dish is not an option. The reality is we can get most of what we watch via alternative means. Giving up Cable just means $90 a month back in our pocket so all is good.

Like you for the comment Owen. I actually do not watch much TV these days anyway. So why pay for what I do not need. Thanks for the comments on my site:)

Hey Bro!

About time you smelled the Cable Coffee, unplug and get your life back, I love the look of your site too bro!

I did the same thing, cutting the cord to AT&T about 5 yrs ago and I couldn't be happier about it~!

Now I am about to ditch Comcast cable, too, and it's all over a payment I made on 4th of July. Long story, but they want to charge me or shut me off - $25 for possibly making a typo on my checking acct number when submitting for payment. They came up with that today; originally no one had any idea why they were charging $25 or shutting it. Now this horrible customer service issue has highlighted all the same issues for me in the US, you have sited for Rogers in Canada. I seriously doubt I made a mistake paying them and think they either forgot to put payments through on a holiday or had a failed batch of payments.

Basically, Comcast is a glorified antenna for me. We live near an Air Force Base, so our reception has problems. It's $64.16 monthly to have basic TV - not including CNN, Comedy Central or any other logical channel that used to be considered basic - plus internet. I rarely use the internet because our living room is thankfully a hot spot. So we pay $64.16 for this antenna. All around are better offers from DirecTV or The Dish for less money and many, many more channels. I must be crazy to stay with Comcast. I'm kind of glad this happened to wake me up.

I'm shocked at your timely blog post~! We've always had an eerie connection, Rob, both losing our Dads and all, but this is down to the day! I can't thank you enough for this blog post! You've stated it exactly how I feel about cable and how I felt about the phone company, too. I would urge anyone who's nervous about going to MagicJack or just their mobile, to calm and just do it. Mobile phones have GPS, do not let the phone company tell you the 911 service won't work. It's a pathetic last ditch attempt to keep your $80 per month coming in. Stand up to their Fear mongering! It will lower the prices across the board and force competition.
