Last week it was Apple and today well it was Google’s turn. The comments below are based on my personal opinion.
The ITA Purchase
It was time for another large company to make major announcement’s. My good friend Owen Greaves does a really good job of talking about Google’s purchase of ITA Software in his blog. I am not going to rehash the ITA purchase but this gives Google an in to the travel industry. Now they will be in position to offer ads based on where someone is flying and the demographics on where they are going and the type of flight they are taking.
The DOJ should disallow this purchase on a couple of accounts. The first is privacy. This purchase just gives Google way too much control over data mining. That in itself should pose enough of a threat to the DOJ. The 2nd is giving one company this much control is absurd. It is actually way worse then when the DOJ came down on Microsoft. I wonder if Google has done any political lobbying ahead of time to ensure this purchase is allowed to be completed. Time will tell.
Google Instant
The 2nd big announcement today was Google Instant.. Google Instant will speed up searches and deliver them as you type. I really like that idea because it will make my searching experience faster. One thing I did notice is Google announced that it will not be ready for mobile until a later date.
Personally I believe delaying their mobile launch was a big mistake. Mobile is the biggest growing market and Google should have been ready for it as part of the launch. I believe to be successful you have to be prepared to support mobile right out of the gate. The market is changing and mobile is hot right now. If it hurts Google in the long term, only time will tell.
Conclusion
Google continues to dominate the search market until a new upstart company comes a long and seizes the market with something revolutionary. Until this happens Google is and will continue to be King.
What are your thought’s on Google’s moves today?
