Two Weeks Ago With Scott Mills at Art Lockart’s Class at Humber College

Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of joining my good friend Scott Mills at Humber College in Toronto to share with some law enforcement students. As adults we always wonder what the future of the world will be. After these days I can assure you that the world is in real amazing shape. These young adults are bright, informed, caring and already have some life experience. They have amazing energy.

I love joining Scott when he goes out speaking because he makes everything relative. He talks about current events and then relates them back to the group he is talking too. This makes the discussion all relative and current.

Art Lockart the class instructor introduced Scott Mills as “The leading guy in social media in Canada in law enforcement”. I would have to very strongly agree with this statement. Scott is someone who is on the leading edge for law enforcement.

Most of the students in Art’s classes want to be police officers, border services officers or just involved in the justice system. These are great aspirations for these young adults.

We spent a lot of time talking about building relationships and how relationships get tips. Just being a police officer does not get you respect but developing relationships with people does. How else would a cop and a homeless man become great friends. More on this later:)

In his talk and most of his talks, Scott talks about the 4 p’s. They are:

  1. Purpose
  2. Process
  3. Payoff
  4. Potential

We spent a lot of time talking about being careful on social media. Employers, friends and even enemies are all over social media. We talked about discretion. One of the suggestions was not to post the pictures you did not want shown on social media. They key is to protect yourself and not let others do it for yo. Do not depend on your security settings on Facebook because you can decide if you want people to see something or not. If you are unsure of what you might be posting then don’t post it.

Now back to the homeless man. How does a homeless man and a cop become friends? Well during G20 Real was outside of police headquarters threatening to kill some police officers. Scott offered to take Real for a coffee and that was the start of an unconventional friendship. I have met Real and I can say he is really a nice man. He just has different issues then the rest of us. If you would like to follow this great story, please follow #HomelessJoe on Twitter:)

A lot of time was spent with the students talking about connecting with people and channeling there energy into doing productive things. For example getting getting Grafitti artists to do productive murals across town:) Some of this art work is absolutely amazing and these are really talented individuals.

The two days spent with these students was energizing and amazing. It was such a pleasure to spend time with them.
