My online web site, this website was in trouble this week. My website was down. If you are online and your website goes down that is the kiss of death. Your website needs to be up and it needs to be online.
Last week I did major updates to my website. WordPress 3.6 came out and there were several plugin updates. One of the plugins which was updated was the Nextgen graphics library. The reason I mentioned Nextgen is it was the root of my issue. Once this combination was updated, I could not access my site. So how did good planing save my online presence?
When I do major updates I always do a backup first using Backupbuddy. For those who do not know, BackupBuddy is a tool which will backup your entire WordPress install..Once the backup was completed I upgraded my WordPress base install and tested my site. All was working. At this point I knew that WordPress and my theme Headway are not the issue.
I then started to update each plugin one at a time. After each plugin update, I tested my site. When I upgraded Nextgen, my entire site’s front end was not accessible. This was not a good thing and now screamed emergency. For a lot of people stress would set in and the question what do I do now.
I had a backup of my web site so I was not worried. If worse came to worse I could have restored it in minutes and have my site back up. Fortunately I was still able to access the WordPress admin back end so I did not need to restore the back end. Since I had used a systematic approach in updating my web site, I knew that the Nextgen plugin was the issue. I deactivated the plugin and that resolved my issue. Now I had some work ahead of me but at least I knew what the issue was.
I do not take short cuts when I update my sites or client sites. Too many people do and that is not a good thing. Taking short cuts puts your online presence at risk. Putting your online presence at risk is not good. Many web site designers and developers take this approach. It is the wrong approach to take.
You should always protect your online presence and your website. If you are unsure of how too, please fill out my contact form and we can discuss how you can protect yourself. For a nominal fee, your website can be protected so you will not have to worry about it.
