Having spent a long time in the social media space I really notice when selective areas of business and life are engaging. One sport where being on social media can create controversy is sports. Most sports leagues prohibit tweeting during a game. I really don’t blame them at all. There is one sports team that has a unique and very close relationship with it’s fans. They always have had a great relationship. They are the Toronto Rock of the National Lacrosse League. They are truly a special organization.

There relationship with the fans continue on to social media. Many of the rock staff, players and even cheerleaders are on Twitter engaging with the fans. Even the Toronto Rock Owner Jamie Dawick has an active twitter account. He is always engaging with the fans the people who are passionate about Canada’s national summer sport.

For me it just intensifies the relationship I have with our team. I have been a long time lacrosse fan since 1989 and as a result of the Rock I have even been involved in minor lacrosse at the Ontario Lacrosse Association level. I have a lot to be thankful for in the lacrosse community.

I frankly chose not to do business with family. With few exceptions I never break this rule until recently. My brother Gord talks a big line. The reality is he is a salesperson. That is what he does. We for years have had an on again off again relationship. I should have frankly left it off.

Over 4 months ago my brother promised to help me with business. It is a good thing I have not relied on him because he has done nothing for me. To take it even further he asked me to help my cousin with his web site promising me to get me the content my cousin needed. That was over 4 months ago.

The reality is I should have known better. I let my guard and judgement down. I will not again. That is for sure. Frankly at this point I do not think that I should even entertain apologizes. Some people would say I should for family reasons but at this poinbt after a track record of over 30 years I am not interested.

Two of the biggest reasons I do not do business with family is because they want everything for free and they never keep promises in many cases unless it suits them. It is not worth the family fall out when the deal goes bad. The reality is business is business but most people can not separate the two.

This is why I never do business with family.

Last night in #Toolschat on Twitter, one of the questions was around what your social media plans for 2012 were. I thought a one line answer on Twitter would not do justice to it. I thought I would write a quick post with some more detail in it.

One of the things I have decided to do for 2012 is to go back to basics. I am basically doing most of my social media on Twitter, Facebook, Google +, Linkedin, YouTube, Picasa, Stumbleupon and Digg. I am so busy that I would rather manage these sites really well then do a not so good job because I am spread too thin. I also consider blogging part of social media and I continue to blog on 3 blogs on a regular basis.

The problem with sites like Quora and now Pintrest is I consider them fads. They are unproven. I know a lot of people jump on new sites because they are new and the in thing. I tend to take a more systematic approach with new sites. I wait 6 months to a year and then decide. The one exception to that has been Google + because of the power and the Google name. I also want to make sure the site is around for a long time before I invest my time and content into it. Look at the demise of Formulists for example. They had a lack of cash flow.

One thing I have started to do more is use Google +. This is one site that I have had a hard time getting into on a regular basis so now I just use it more. This was one of my big goals for 2012.

I have now moved my weekly This Week In Review video back from Ustream to YouTube. I am no longer posting it on Vimeo as well. The reality is I am trying to stream line and keep it simple. YouTube has the most viewers of any video site on the web.

I consider blogging a big part of social media. On this blog I am back posting 4 to 5 times a week. On my personal blog I am going to be blogging more. I hope to do 3 to 4 times a week. On the Customer Service Hall Of Shame I will be blogging at least twice a week.

Some of these goals I wanted to start earlier this month but due to all the family and friend issues we have had going on, this has been hard.

Please share your social media plans for 2012 with a comment in the box below.

One thing about social media is fist impressions. They mean a lot on social media. It is amazing what is said in a name. it is the first impression and one that says a lot about you. Yes we all judge people on the first impression. It is just the way the world reacts.

When you are choosing a name on social media I suggest that you chose your own name, one that reflects who you are or your brand. You do not want that name to be negative at all. The reason for this is people will think that you are a negative person. If your name is a positive one, people will think you are positive.

I can never understand why people would use names like jerk_guy on Twitter. This would be a person I would never want to talk too. Why would talk to this negative person? They might be great at what they do but they are now portraying themselves negatively. This is not the person I would want to be around at all.

If you are representing a brad, use your brand as your name. For example my friend Linda uses the name @Udderlysmooth because this is her brand. Linda does a great job in representing her brand on social media and should be commended for it.

I always tell people to use their name or brand name. Never make it negative. I always want to be surrounded by positive people. Negative for me screams stay away. How do you feel about names on social media? Please leave a comment and share below.
